I thought it would look very odd to have shadows on the banks of a small and shallow stream, which is why I didn't add them.

This is a good idea and looks nice, but I think the water should be a little animated.

I can't use draw ground. It shows the brown part underneath it and in the river and it looks terrible.

It uses draw ground so it can be used with other ground types, so I don't know how well it would work.

Using the static ocean texture doesn't look much better than the current texture. Trust me, I've seen it.
