How do I build road bridges?

I'm confused about building road bridges... Can someone link to a tutorial or explain how they work?

Basically, I have an existing crossroads and I want to make one of the roads into a bridge instead. So I select "Country Road" and the game goes into build mode. I've then tried:

1. Click where I want the bridge to start, click the button that looks like a bridge, and click where I want it to end

2. Click the "up" ramp where I want the bridge to start, expecting to get a ramp

3. Play around with the "up" and "down" arrows

None of these things have worked - I either get 2 ramps pointing different directions, or just a high road with no ramps!

What am I doing wrong? Thanks!
